Student Care & Advocacy
Who is Student Care & Advocacy?
Student Care & Advocacy (SCA) at the University of Dayton provides comprehensive case management to support students facing a wide range of personal challenges. Recognizing that student concerns are often complex, SCA helps students navigate difficulties that may impact their well-being and personal success.
What SCA Does:
- Individualized Support: SCA Case Managers work directly with students to understand their specific situations and develop personalized comprehensive support plans.
- Collaborative Approach: SCA works in partnership with students, campus departments, and community organizations to ensure holistic support.
- Resource Connection: SCA connects students with relevant campus and community resources and support services to address needs.
- Skill Building: SCA empowers students to advocate for themselves and develop coping mechanisms to overcome future obstacles.
Common Student Concerns Addressed by SCA:
- Basic needs insecurity (food, housing, financial)
- Family issues
- Grief and loss
- Substance use concerns
- Social and transitional challenges
- Mental health concerns (anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, self-injurous behavior)
- Trauma support and crisis response
- Crime victim and impacted parties
- Assistance with university processes and procedures
How to Get Help:
- Students can seek assistance for themselves by submitting a Self-Referral.
- Faculty, staff, peers and community members can submit a CARE Referral to refer a student of concern.
Do you know a student in distress?
Please submit concern about a student or incident on campus using the CARE Referral submission form.
*Please note this is NOT an emergency reporting system. CARE Referrals are only monitored during normal business hours, 8:30am to 4;30pm. If you have an immediate campus safety issue, please call Public Safety at 937-229-2121.

Ask for help. Not because you are weak. But because you want to remain strong.
The University of Dayton aims to create a community that cares for one another. The overall campus experience can often be challenging, and asking for help can be difficult for some students. To seek out help from others is a great strength. It shows that you value yourself and your community by prioritizing what you need in order to be happy and well. Students are invited to request assistance from Student Care and Advocacy through a Self-Referral or by calling the Dean of Students Office.

I'm worried about my student.
The University of Dayton offers a wide variety of support and resources to build resiliency within students from a holistic lens. Wellness is on a continuum from practicing self-care to talking with others about concerns to seeking immediate help. Building strong resilience skills within your student helps to promote a proactive approach to worrisome behavior.
Discussing resources available with your student such as their RA/Fellow, Student Care & Advocacy and other campus resources can help to build skills empowering your student to reach out when in need. It is also important to recognize when a student is in need of immediate emergency services. If you are unsure of what you can do, please submit a CARE Referral or you can call the Dean of Students Office for a consultation.

- Causing property damage
- Interfering with the health, safety, or well-being of other members of our community
- Experiencing a health emergency
Campus Awareness Response and Evaluation Team (C.A.R.E.)
Student Care & Advocacy works in partnership with, and under the guidance of, the Campus Awareness Response and Evaluation Team (C.A.R.E.). The C.A.R.E. Team is an interdisciplinary behavioral intervention and threat assessment team concerned with the health, safety, and wellbeing of the entire campus community, and is committed to creating a campus environment that is safe for learning, living, and working.
The C.A.R.E. Team's mission is to assess the potential threat students may pose to themselves or to others and to provide early intervention, support, and behavioral response to students who display varying levels of disruptive or concerning behavior. The team convenes regularly to identify, assess and respond to concerns and/or potential threats to the campus community.
