Table legs are unfolded and trifold boards are propped up — actions ripped straight from the first act of Pitch Perfect, or perhaps the first Friday of the fall semester at the University of Dayton. The massive organization fair, Up the Orgs, shows off the more than 200 student clubs available on campus, ranging from academic organizations and Greek life to club sports and special interests. From Legos to languages, that’s how we build community.
1 — NovelTea Club
The name says it all. NovelTea combines a tea party with a book club for a relaxing meetup of reading, sipping and spending time with bookish buddies. “NovelTea creates a warm and inviting space outside of normal academic stressors,” said club president Kathryn Davis.
2 — Flyer Foam League
Is that a sock soaring across Central Mall? Soft projectiles — like socks and foam darts — along with pool noodle swords make up the Flyer Foam League’s arsenal. With community and safety in mind, according to president Elisabeth Schmitt, the league meets for several battle-type games, giving rookies and veterans a chance to show off their combat creativity.
3 — Super Smash Bros. Club
Victory is theirs on Fridays when this gaming group gets together for friendly matches and streaming tournament watch parties. New gamers are especially welcome to grab a controller and play along.
4 — Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers
This organization knows how to hit the books and support its members, hosting study tables, résumé reviews and professional networking events. “We empower the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential and to impact the world through STEM,” said president David Garza. Members can also unwind through game nights and celebrations, including sugar skull painting for Dia de los Muertos.
5 — Roundnet Club
If you are walking back from class and happen to pass a patch of grass, sand volleyball pit, indoor court or pool, you may catch the Roundnet Club in action. And, you are more than welcome to hop in for a round of Spikeball, said club president Kassam Madmouj.
6 — Sprouts
Sprouts is helping students grow in healthy habits and mental mindfulness. Through yoga classes, adult coloring book events, mental health charity fundraisers, healthy eating habits workshops and more, the student organization creates space for self-care.
7 — Culinary Club of the University of Dayton
New this fall, students can now come together to cook up tasty meals with instruction from Dayton-area restaurants, using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Founder and president Olivia Harwood said she is excited to mix together sustainability, education and community in the kitchen.
8 — Over Exposed and Under Developed
Strike a pose! This longtime campus club was recently reborn by engineering major Micahael Kennelly and photography major Jayonna Johnson. It’s the perfect organization for students with an interest in photography who are looking to share and build their skills through workshops, critiques and collaboration.
